What is High-Throughput Experimentation?

HTE is a powerful approach in small molecule process development. By running dozens to hundreds of miniaturized reactions in parallel, HTE enables rapid screening of variables like catalysts, solvents, and ligands—dramatically increasing the chances of finding optimal reaction conditions with minimal input material and manual effort.

Our HTE capabilities

  • Advanced Robotic Platform
    • Parallel reactions: 8 to 96 at once, 1–20 mL scale
    • Temperature range: -35 °C to 180 °C | Pressure: up to 120 bar
    • Automated liquid/solid handling (0.1 mg resolution)
    • Handles viscous liquids and gases like N₂, H₂, CO, CO₂
    • Kinetic module with real-time data collection

  • Controlled Environment
    • Dual-chamber glove/purge box system
    • Safe handling of moisture- and air-sensitive materials
    • Ultra-low oxygen and water conditions (<50 ppm)

  • Analytical Excellence (QC)
    • Automated sample prep & filtration
    • Redundant UPLC systems (PDA, MS, chiral & achiral separation)
    • 24-hour turnaround for 96 reactions
    • GC system with established method screening

Our setup is designed to explore broad chemical space efficiently—supporting both early-phase research and scalable process development

Who can apply

  • Everyone with a conclusive and HTE suitable proposal
  • Ideally PhD students and Postdocs (MSc and BSc students can be considered with an appropriate proposal)
  • The proposal must be purely academic and Small Molecule related (Natural product synthesis, method development, material sciences etc.)

Lonza’s requirements

To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Submit a short, convincing project proposal that is suitable for HTE
  • Provide non-commercial starting materials (approx. 5–10 mg per reaction)
  • Agree to comply with all Lonza safety and ethical guidelines

How it works

Once the submissions close, our expert panel will evaluate the entries to select the best proposal.

Submissions will be assessed based on:

  • Technical Feasibility – Is the concept practical within our lab setup?
  • Likelihood of Success – Will the experiment yield meaningful results?
  • Relevance – Is the research topic aligned with cutting-edge industrial or academic interest?
  • Sustainability Aspects – Does the proposal address green chemistry or resource efficiency?
  • Scientific Visibility – Could the outcomes contribute to publications or broader scientific impact?
