Lonza to Present Latest Research on Polyglyceryl Esters at SEPAWA
  • Lonza also will highlight its ScreenLight™ Block bioactive functional ingredient that helps protect skin from blue light and environmental stressors.

South Plainfield, NJ (USA), 9 October 2018 – At SEPAWA 2018 Lonza will present the latest research on polyglyceryl ester surfactants and showcase its Polyaldo® brand. Lonza also will feature ScreenLight™ Block, its new bioactive functional ingredient that helps protect skin against the visible effects of blue light, UV light and pollution. SEPAWA takes place 10-12 October in Berlin (DE). Lonza will be at Stand A118-119.

The Lonza Polyaldo® polyglyceral esters (PGEs) are naturally derived surfactants that can be easily customized to suit the cleansing-formulation needs of the global personal care market. PEGylation-free, Ethylene oxide- free, and 1,4-dioxane free, the Polyaldo® PGE includes proprietary and versatile alternatives to synthetic surfactants. The PGE range offers excellent foam generation while maintaining mildness.

“Polyglyceryl esters can be naturally sourced and have a wide range of solubility and hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) numbers,” said Jordan Petkov, PhD, Head Global R&D, Consumer Product Ingredients (CPI), Lonza. “They can be in the form of a liquid, waxy material or a solid ingredient, depending on their fatty acid composition; and they can be used in emulsions, creams and cosmetics.”

Naturally Derived and High Performance

Petkov will present “Polyglyceryl Ester Based Surfactants – An Attractive Green Alternative to the Current Non-Ionic Surfactants Offering” at the Innovations Forum.

“The presentation will be technical and will demonstrate that we understand the challenges and functionality of the PGE molecule,” Petkov said. “Relying on our deep understanding of PGEs, we raise the performance of the natural molecule to that of synthetics.”

In addition to emphasizing the naturally derived chemistries, “free-from” claims and the certifications (ECOCERT, Kosher Food Grade and Halal), Petkov will discuss the versatility and customizability of the PGEs and how cosmetic chemists gain additional flexibility to design robust formulations.

Backed by data from Lonza's latest laboratory evaluations, Petkov will characterize four Polyaldo chemistries by surface tension, dynamic surface tension and foamability. He will show the correlation between dynamic surface tension and foaming.

“PGEs are capable of significantly reducing the surface tension of a cosmetic formulation while being very mild at the same time,” Petkov said. “Some of our PGEs are very good foaming molecules, and this combination of foamability and mildness make them attractive options in personal care products.”

ScreenLight™ Block

The recently launched ScreenLight™ Block provides a powerful defensive shield against the visible skin-aging effects of blue light. In addition, it helps protect skin against the effects of UV stress and pollution.

“ScreenLight™ Block is particularly relevant for consumers who understand that environmental stress factors may negatively affect their skin,” said Ann Steinmann, Technical Marketing Manager EMEA – Personal Care.

A presenter at the SEPAWA poster session, Steinmann said ScreenLight™ Block is suitable for such skin care formulations as facial cream and after-shave lotion, for make-up and for gentle cosmetic formulations.

Key Attributes

ScreenLight™ Block helps protect skin against the visible effects of environmental stress factors in a number of ways. It:

  • Helps reduce the appearance of dark spots, resulting in skin that appears more evenly toned (based on in vivo clinical data)
  • Helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles (based on subjects' perceptions of themselves)
  • Helps prevent increased melanin production from exposure to visible light and pollution (based on ex vivo data)
  • Helps protect skin against the visible effects of light exposure by reducing the negative impact on cellular antioxidant potential (based on ex vivo test)

Lonza produces the ScreenLight™ Block by using cutting-edge Supercritical CO2 extraction to obtain the Physalis alkekengi extract from the subtropical fruit Chinese lantern.
