The event will take place in the main conference room of the JW Marriott Parq Vancouver at 1:15pm – 2:15pm on 25 June.

Solving Probiotic Delivery Challenges

Optimizing probiotic delivery in the gastrointestinal tract is essential to efficacy, but optimal delivery remains a significant industry challenge. Probiotics are highly susceptible to moisture, humidity, temperature and acidic stomach conditions, all of which have an impact on both stability and strain survival. Lonza's advanced dosage forms, such as its DRcaps™ modified release capsules and DUOCAP® capsule-in-capsule technology, provide innovative solutions to these challenges.

Lonza's proprietary DUOCAP® capsule-in-capsule technology offers a unique solution for combination ingredients like pre- and pro-biotic formulations. The inner capsule can contain a probiotic that is suspended in a solubilized prebiotic formula. The prebiotic is released first when the outer capsule dissolves, thus feeding the beneficial microorganisms when the inner capsule dissolves. This dual action helps to improve the probiotics performance in the body.

Lonza's DRcaps™ capsules also support overcoming probiotic challenges with stability and strain survival. Made from hypromellose (HPMC), these capsules are acid-resistant, protecting the probiotics in the low pH stomach environment.

According to Barri Sigvertsen, “Consumers recognize digestive health affects their overall well-being and that probiotics can play an important role in supporting a healthy digestive system. Consequently, the use of probiotic supplements has grown significantly over the last decade in line with the holistic approach to self-care.

However, the right formulation and delivery form are key to developing successful products that are efficacious and deliver the claimed benefit. Lonza's innovative solutions like DUOCAP® and DRcaps™ capsules offer supplement manufacturers stable and efficient delivery forms designed to increase probiotic strain survival.”
