The Senior Director IP Division Head CHI role offers an outstanding opportunity to lead and develop the intellectual property strategy for Lonza’s Capsules and Health Ingredients division. This position plays a critical part in our global operations by providing skilled IP and business-related support, driving transactional activities, and inventing robust IP strategies. Key responsibilities:

  • Lead negotiations of IP-related clauses in service agreements, and draft and negotiate in-/out-licensing within the segment.
  • Supervise or lead the negotiation and structuring of Research and Development, Research and Technology, and Collaboration Agreements, strategic licenses, and other technology agreements as required.
  • Develop and guide intricate IP strategies for the segment, engaging with the leadership team at the segment or business unit level.
  • Develop and put into action a solid business strategy that takes into account global IP laws to align with business objectives.
  • Analyze and supervise competitive intelligence to inform IP-relevant business decisions.
  • Manage and/or guide strategic risk assessments of reassessments, challenges, viewpoints, post-grant procedures, and IP legal disputes.
  • Implement global segment IP strategy in alignment with the global corporate IP strategy.
  • Decide or supervise strategic patent filing and prosecution aligned with the segment.
  • Mitigate IP risks by reviewing business unit practices and proposing solutions to the Global Head of IP and the business unit.
  • Provide or supervise Freedom-to-Operate (FTO) analysis and advise business unit leadership on recommended courses of action.
  • Review or supervise the review of the segment's publications, including advertising material, scientific articles, presentations, or posters.
  • Lead the implementation of corporate global IP policies.

Key requirements:

  • Juris Doctorate (JD) or equivalent in Intellectual Property or Transactional Law
  • Member of Bar Association; Patent Bar Qualification preferred.
  • Post-qualification experience as a qualified patent attorney preferably in-house and private practice, managing and supervising a team.
  • Proven experience working in Biology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Biochemistry sectors
  • Outstanding skills in prioritizing work, coordinating diverse activities, and functioning under pressure.
  • Proven team management expertise and the ability to negotiate effectively internally and externally at higher levels.
  • Ability to work well with and lead diverse personalities in a team.

In line with Lonza’s compensation philosophy of paying at or around the median of the Life Science industry, the annual base salary Lonza Walkersville, Maryland reasonably expects to pay from your position ranges from $206’000 to $350’000.

We use broad salary ranges that reflect the competitive market for similar jobs, provide sufficient opportunity for growth as you gain experience and expand responsibilities, while also allowing for differentiation on performance. Based on the breadth of our ranges, most new hires will start at the company between the lower and the middle part of the applicable range. We tailor our offers within the range based on job-related factors, including organizational needs, internal equity, market data, geographic area and the selected candidate’s experience, education, industry knowledge, location, technical and/or communication skills and other factors that may prove relevant during the selection process. This range is only inclusive of base salary, and base pay is just one component of Lonza’s total compensation package for employees.
