  • Industry Initiatives

Responsible Care is the worldwide chemical industry's commitment to continual improvement in all aspects of Health, Safety and Environment performance. It is a private sector initiative, controlled through the national chemical industry’s associations.

Lonza companies joined the Responsible Care programs of the national chemical associations in Switzerland and the United States in the early nineties. In 2005 we transformed our Responsible Care program of the sites in the United States into SOCMA's equivalent - ChemStewards® - and operate under it since. Our sites in the United States are third party audited and certified under the ChemStewards® program.

Lonza Group corporate EHS specialists audit the EHS&S management and performance of all Group sites across the globe according to the ChemStewards® methodology.

Lonza Group declared support of ICCA's new Responsible Care Global Charter in 2009 and in March 2015 signed the Charter endorsing its 6 base principles.

  • MODA™ Green Alternative

Paper-based QC micro processes are expensive, error-prone, time and labor-intensive. Use of paper binders for associated records can easily generate hundreds of thousands of pages per year.

Lonza offers a proven, flexible means to achieve the goal of a paperless, automated quality organization. The MODA™ solution ties together automated scheduling, workflows, mobile data acquisition, device integration, and advanced analytics. Lonza has implemented the MODA™ solution at our custom manufacturing facilities in the United States, Europe, and Asia. By utilizing Lonza's environmentally friendly technologies your company can join the growing list of organizations that have benefited from MODA™ platform to go paperless and support green practices.

  • Responsibility and Solutions

The industrial operations of Lonza are highly sophisticated and in many instances  energy-intensive. Ecological as well as economic considerations demand careful management of all resources. It is imperative for our industrial activity to make optimal use of raw materials and energy in all processes, and to develop and maintain a carefully managed system for handling by-products and wastes. We are aware of our responsibility towards nature and the earth's limited resources and take it into account whenever business decisions are made.

Distinct programs guide the organizational units in their efforts to conduct industrial operations in a sustainable manner. We combine environmental management systems, national programs (Responsible Care, ChemStewards), safety and industrial hygiene programs, and internal audits with site-specific managerial tools to progress along the path of continual improvement.

  • Horseshoe Crab Conservation

Essentially all endotoxin detection methods in use today are derived from horseshoe crab blood. At Lonza, we are not only aware of the importance of the horseshoe crab for its contribution to the safety of drugs and medical devices, but also for its ecological role. We use best practices in the harvesting and handling of the horseshoe crabs that are used in the manufacturing of Limulus Amoebocyte Lysate (LAL).

In addition, to reduce the need for an animal source, we developed the PyroGene™ rFC assay. This LAL alternative method reduces the demand on a natural resource and can help meet supply chain sustainability initiatives. Learn more about horshoe crab conservation.
