Principal Scientist R&D - 3D & Tissue modelling
United Kingdom, Slough

Today, Lonza is a global leader in life sciences operating across three continents. While we work in science, there’s no magic formula to how we do it. Our greatest scientific solution is talented people working together, devising ideas that help businesses to help people. In exchange, we let our people own their careers. Their ideas, big and small, genuinely improve the world. And that’s the kind of work we want to be part of.

We are looking to recruit a Principal Scientist to join our Protein Function and Interaction group within the Protein and Process Analytics (P&PA) R&D team. We are seeking a highly motivated individual with demonstrated  evidence of developing and implementing new scientific strategies in the field of biomolecular functions and interaction: cell-based mode of actions (MOAs) and cellular analysis’ study design, assay set up and data interpretation, with focus on delivering high value technical innovation both via internal analytical projects and as part of a wider global R&D collaborative project team.

This high-level scientific position requires extensive experience in the area of functional characterization of new molecular formats biotherapeutics via cell-based assays development and experience in the area of 3D cell cultures and tissue modelling. Assay development experience in quantitative enzymatic pathways, flow cytometry and immunoassays is also highly desirable.

Minimum requirement for this role includes five years industrial experience with developing functional assays that support characterisation stages of non-clinical and pre-clinical development of biotherapeutics. Alongside all the analysis relevant to the characterization of the biotherapeutic product, it also requires the ability to analyse and interpret complex data and to develop, optimise, troubleshoot, and support implementation of complex functional 3D assays. The incumbent will assume programme leadership within own discipline, be responsible for the oversight and execution of the scientific activities as part of the team, which will include element of laboratory work, scientific review, project leadership and management with element of coaching and mentoring junior scientists, technology scouting and driving implementation of new technology within the Lonza network.

Key responsibilities:

Play a key role in the strategy and the decision making process to support assay characterisation and the generation of the appropriate data packages and documentation. Expected to work independently on own projects, but open to collaborate with colleagues within and across functional groups to ensure deadline are met.

Strong experience in scoping and design complex projects and responsible for the execution of highly technical experiments; responsible for processing, interpretation and presentation of complex data outputs to guide decision making.

Technology scouting to support development of innovative cell-based approaches and driving implementation of new technologies within the Lonza network to expand business offering.

Providing scientific leadership and direction within the team and leading strong collaboration effort across the bio R&D department to maximise synergies and impact.

Engaging in external collaboration and disseminating results through publications and participation to high-profile conferences and workshops.

Act as an special matter expert (SME) in multiple collaborative R&D projects and lead/support analytical discussion, translate data into project contexts to support decision making.

Key requirements:

PhD in Life Sciences / Science or equivalent - preferred area of study: Biochemistry / Immunotherapy/biomedical sciences, Biotechnology, Bio-manufacturing or related disciplines At least five years practical industry and/or academic experience in an analytical laboratory; thorough understanding of the state of the art of the technologies and their applications in the area of analytical characterization of Bio-therapeutics with strong knowledge and practical expertise in immunoassay and bioassay development to target MOA, quantitative enzymatic pathways assay development strong experience of cell culture, co-culture and 3D system set up; understanding of immunology and extracellular matrix biology is preferred.

Documented history of high-quality publications, patents, and filings in the field of therapeutic functions.

A good general background in established analytical methods within the industry, including the strengths and weakness of the various approaches.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to directly influence stakeholders in a scientific capacity and to deliver technical projects within a matrix organisation. Able to motivate self and other under challenging conditions and desire to collaborate to achieve collective success. Every day, Lonza’s products and services have a positive impact on millions of people. For us, this is not only a great privilege, but also a great responsibility. How we achieve our business results is just as important as the achievements themselves. At Lonza, we respect and protect our people and our environment. Any success we achieve is no success at all if not achieved ethically.

People come to Lonza for the challenge and creativity of solving complex problems and developing new ideas in life sciences. In return, we offer the satisfaction that comes with improving lives all around the world. The satisfaction that comes with making a meaningful difference.
