Our Geleen site provides significant expertise in clinical and commercial manufacturing in the heart of Europe supporting a number of clients in the cell, gene therapy and mRNA space.

As Site Head, this individual will have overall responsibility for managing the site together with the site leadership team by directing the development and production of therapies under cGMP conditions, ensuring the safety, quality, compliance and efficiency, product delivery and financial execution. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Deliver products and operating results for Cell and Gene Therapy products with full accountability for operational management of a matrix structured Lonza business and operations setup

  • Lead the site through growth and ongoing capital expansion projects.

  • Active member of the global operations team by reporting into the Global Head of Operations for Cell and Gene Technologies.

  • Support global operations strategy, foster best practice sharing and resource exchange.

  • Working with Site Leadership team in all departments (Operations, QA, QC, HR, Finance, etc.) the Site Head will be responsible for a growing staff, across Manufacturing, Process Development, BioAssay Development, Supply Chain, Facilities & Engineering, Technology Support and Risks Prevention.  Safety, Hygiene & Environmental and Security will also fall under the responsibility of the Site Head

  • Establish a strong relationship with Clients and open communication channels allowing to work and execute projects in sync.

  • Lead, develop and coach a Site Leadership team with shared business objectives and manage continuous improvement and on-going organizational change

  • Responsible for product process development and improvement of existing and new products in all areas of manufacturing – cost, quality, safety environment, waste, etc

  • Working in collaboration with peers, manage external communications with clients including government negotiations and funding approvals as appropriate

  • Ensure proactive community relations, Lonza’s reputation and leadership for community involvement.

  • Ensure that the Geleen site is in full compliance regarding all relevant FDA, EMEA and other global compliance, safety and quality procedures, programs, guidelines, and work instructions

  • Ensure production capacity can meet customer needs. Develop and execute plans in a timely manner to provide capacity for future requirements. Assure appropriate staffing to meet business goals

  • Responsible for annual spending and capital budgets, as well as for providing timely all site reports needed for the overall Operations report

Key requirements:

  • BS/MA in Life Science (e.g. Biological or Chemical Engineering) ideally with an MBA degree

  • Considerable experience and background aseptic or biological manufacturing and strong working knowledge of cGMP.

  • Cell and Gene Therapy industry experience combined with a past role as Site Head highly preferred.

  • Management experience and ability to move daily with ease from hands-on to strategic planning

  • Background in pharmaceutical production in biotechnology  or in CMO or CDMO

  • Proven track record of delivering results against short and medium term goals and ability to identify and fix problems at all levels across all functions

  • Strong financial and business understanding to manage site performance according to budget and plan.

  • Experience working in matrix organizations and ability to lead a multi-disciplinary team to face complex business challenges

  • Fluent in English (verbal and written)
