R&D Principal Scientist

We are looking for a highly motivated and talented Principal scientist to join the high-performing and dynamic R&D group at Lonza Houston site. By leading a team of scientists and associates, the candidate will leverage his/her expertise to lead the development and optimization of Lonza viral vector manufacturing platforms at molecular and cellular levels. The work together with the improvement of bioprocess would significantly increase the productivity and quality of viral vectors and thus make cell and gene therapy affordable to patients. The position will report directly to the Head of viral vector R&D.

Key responsibilities:

  • Independently plan, design and execute the experiments, collect and analyze the data and interpret the results

  • Effectively communicate the data and project progress regularly within R&D and across the key stakeholders/departments such as process development and commercial development

  • Supervise and train junior scientists and associates, manage direct report to meet the team targets and deliverables within project timeline

  • Continuously improve viral vector manufacturing platforms to attract and anchor new clients together with cross-functional teams

  • Actively propose and test new ideas, capture and protect intellectual property with patent applications in order to create long-term competitive technology advantages for Lonza CGT business  

  • Attend meetings and conferences to present R&D work and keep up with the latest technology in cell and gene therapy regarding the viral vector manufacturing and analytics

  • Perform other duties as assigned

Key requirements:

  • Ph.D. degree in molecular virology/biology with > 5-year experience in industry or relevant virus research experience in academia evidenced by high profile peer-reviewed publications

  • Highly skilled in plasmid vector design, CRISPR gene editing, cell line engineering, viral production, transfection, Western blot, qPCR/ddPCR, flow cytometry, and cell-based assays

  • Excellent communication skills in oral and written English
