Lead Scientist - Mammalian Cell Engineering

We are currently looking to recruit a Lead Scientist, to join our cell engineering team within our expanding R&D campus.

We are looking for scientists with a background in cell expression technologies to join our team focused on developing next generation, industrially relevant cell expression platforms. As a Lead Scientist you can expect to be involved heavily in the development of improved expression systems or services for the production of complex therapeutic proteins, and act as a mentor to more junior members of the team.

Key responsibilities:

  • Contributing to the delivery of new CHO-based mammalian expression hosts and vector systems for the expression of complex therapeutic proteins.

  • Engineering mammalian cell lines (e.g. random integration, targeted integration and gene editing – e.g. CRISPR-based systems).

  • Generating mammalian expression vectors using state of the art assembly techniques

  • Phenotypic characterisation of edited cell lines with relevant assays (e.g. NGS, ddPCR, qPCR and flow cytometry) and cell culture techniques (e.g., shake flask/ bioreactor).

  • Collating, analysing, evaluating and sign-off data to produce good quality information and traceable records under the direction of the project lead.

  • Presentation of results in written and oral reports.

  • Working closely with other groups within R&D to deliver solutions or improvements in recombinant protein expression (in particular with R&D Process Development, Microbial Expression & Protein Analytics)

  • Actively keep abreast of relevant academic literature (e.g., in the field of cell engineering and expression technologies)

  • Contributing ideas and opinions to scientific discussions to aid the development of new technologies.

  • Working as a team player and working with a high degree of flexibility

  • Functioning as a role model in the laboratory to more junior members of the group

Key requirements:

  • BSc/MSc/PhD Degree in Life Sciences / Science/ Molecular Biology

  • Practical experience within R&D in an industrial/academic settings

  • A good technical background in molecular biology and cell culture with the aim of developing or manipulating mammalian expression systems (hosts, vectors and processes).

  • Experience of cell line engineering, ideally with CRISPR-based systems. Experience of pooled and/or arrayed CRISPR-based screening would be an advantage.

  • Experience with gene editing technologies essential

  • Experience of analysing next generation sequencing data would be an advantage.

  • Able to demonstrate contribution to technology development projects, with experience of implementing new technologies that can be transferred from the research environment to GMP manufacture.

  • Ability to work in cross-functional groups to transfer technology into other groups and support commercialisation.

  • A proactive attitude to working and solving challenging problems

  • Good working knowledge of statistics and expertise in design of experiments.

  • Experience with/good understanding of synthetic biology technologies would be desirable
