Lonza is a global multinational company with a broad range of expertise. This opportunity is to join the Personalized Medicine team, based in Kingston, Ontario for a 12-16 month internship. The Engineering Intern will be an integral part of the Product Engineering team, which is focused on sustaining and improving the design of our Cocoon® product line through the product life-cycle. The Cocoon® platform is specifically developed to automate the production of cell-based therapies for clinical applications. The intern will work in a cross-disciplinary team with the goal of ensuring robust and reliable production and field use of an automated bioreactor system related to the manufacture and use of therapeutic cells. The engineering student will be responsible for hands-on support and technical tasks related to the design improvement of innovative cell manufacturing products. This team member will be expected to assist in the design and development process and support processes for complex single-use plastic fluidic pathway and accessories. This person will be accountable for supporting more senior engineering team members’ design work, performing hands-on prototyping and laboratory work, collaborating with cross-departmental groups including biologists and manufacturing technologists, and achieving key goals according to a schedule.

Additionally, as an Engineering Intern on the Product Engineering team you will be expected to meet work expectations consistent with Quality Management System requirements.  This role is expected  to present new ideas and solutions to opportunities.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Work with a multidisciplinary team to deliver on Product Engineering projects
  • Support engineering team with tasks such as component drawings, specifications, design review and analysis
  • Independently design and execute experiments including data analysis, communication of results and proposals for next steps
  • Comply with Quality system requirements and documentation
  • Perform background research to further development of existing products
  • Provide debugging, troubleshooting and issue resolutions for the manufacturing and use of single-use plastic fluidic pathway and accessories
  • Writing and revising technical documents including test protocols and reports, bills of materials, work instructions and quality forms
  • Execute identified corrective actions to improve product and manufacturing process
  • Work within a self-directed team environment
  • Present results to direct supervisor and members of the team
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Key Requirements:

  • Engineering student, preferably with focus on biomedical, mechanical, materials or systems design
  • Strong hands-on skills and comfort with quickly learning use of tools
  • Technical report writing
  • Understanding of CAD and reading engineering drawings or schematics (SolidWorks preferred)
  • Demonstrated experience with problem solving or troubleshooting equipment and root cause analysis
  • Past experience working within a quality management system or regulated environment is beneficial
  • Experience or understanding of injection molding of plastics
  • Data analysis, presentation and communication skills
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Independent work skills
  • Strong work ethic
  • Ability to work in a team setting
