The Senior Project Engineer provides technical leadership and direct support of the execution and delivery of large capital projects within Lonza’s new and existing biopharmaceutical manufacturing facilities, with a focus on HVAC and utility systems.  The role acts as a technical resource to Project Managers and leads cross-functional teams throughout the entire project life cycle to ensure that equipment and facilities are designed, installed, and turned over to meet production needs.  Responsibilities include managing  contractors, vendors, and other engineers to maintaining scope, schedule, and budget. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead design teams consisting of external consultants and internal Lonza customers, such as Operations and Quality Assurance, to properly identify and document equipment design and facility layout requirements.
  • Prepare and organize technical documentation required for  equipment procurement and mechanical subcontracts.  Perform technical evaluation of received bids, and provide input for vendor selection.
  • Manage the development of functional requirements and I/O lists for HVAC control systems.
  • Review and maintain project specifications.
  • Oversee the engineering detailed design, construction and installation of HVAC equipment and utility systems.  Responsibilities include supervision of internal engineers and engineering contractors, oversite of equipment suppliers, and coordination of on-site installers and service-providers to guarantee adherence to specifications, schedules, and budgets. 
  • Ensure engineering documentation turnover packages from suppliers are complete, correct, and comply with Quality Assurance requirements.
  • Direct start-up and commissioning activities (FAT/SAT/IQ/CQ/balancing) including the preparation of test protocols, test execution, troubleshooting, and change control, all per cGMP guidelines. 
  • Report on progress, schedule, and budget for the areas of responsibility. 
  • Support related project and site change control activities including drawing and documentation updates.

Key Requirements:

  • Extensive experience in the operation, design, construction and/or start-up of biopharmaceutical and/or cleanroom facilities (cGMP manufacturing plants, pilot plants, laboratories, semi-conductor, healthcare, etc.).
  • Experience in the management and coordination of engineering & construction management consultants, equipment vendors and contractors.
  • Project management and coordination experience associated with the execution of capital projects in an industrial environment.
  • Experience with control systems (PLC, BMS)
  • BS Chemical or Mechanical Engineering
  • MS Engineering Management or MBA (preferred)
  • PMP Certification (preferred)
