Clinical Development Business Controller

The Clinical Development Business is a critical and fast growing part of Lonza and it spans across 5 sites. The Clinical Development Controller is responsible for supporting the business with  all aspects of financial planning, compliance, reporting and analysis with responsibility for P&L and Balance Sheet positions. The finance lead understands Lonza compliance standards and works closely with various commercial and operational groups across the network. The role will be supporting the Head of Finance to set, implement and deliver on business objectives and strategies.

Key responsibilities:

  • Business Partner – support key Business Unit stakeholders in financial analysis & decision support in the area of pricing, contract negotiations, supply contracts, modeling, project evaluations, costing, performance measures, training, strategic planning, business goal development
  • Management of planning and analysis processes such as long term planning (BSR), annual budget, outlooks.
  • Profitability analysis by site / asset / customer / contract 
  • Tracking delivery of Development Service packages inline with plan. Ensuring clarity of price, volume, timelines, BTO, profitability etc….
  • Management reporting for Clinical Development Sub BU.  Monthly actual and plan reporting to Group & Division in accordance with IFRS, with responsibility for P&L, BS and CF reporting, including BSO oversight.
  • Identify and implement process improvements and efficiencies to ensure correct level of staffing across the Clinical Network – ensure demand and capacity is aligned and resource levels are optimised to support BU profit objectives.
  • Review and standardize business processes and structure across the network ensuring transparency, consistency and best practice sharing in all aspects of costing,  planning, reporting etc…
  • Support Head of Finance, Site Controllers and BSO in ensuring Financial compliance of Clinical Development network in accordance with IFRS, the Lonza Finance Accounting Manual (FAM), the Lonza Management Accounting Manual (MAM) and other required accounting principles
  • Capital expenditure evaluations and submissions. Supports due diligences and business integration; Oversee the financial growth and integration of new acquisitions to the Clinical Development network and ensure system integration. Tracking of key projects vs business case, once approved.
  • Analyses business performance, recommends benchmarks, and highlight the key areas of interest for improvement or monitoring
  • Coaching and development of Business Analyst and Site Controllers to ensure Business Continuity in key reporting tasks and support the development of the Finance talent pipeline
  • Acts as deputy for  Head of Finance in key Business Unit and Divisional Finance meetings and workstreams

Key requirements:

  • Extensive and in-depth controlling experience with thorough understanding of Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A) in big, matrix,  multinational  environment
  • Extensive experience as a "Business Partner" with commercial mind-set to help define business strategy and plans and to actively manage day to day operations
  • Progressive career with increasing responsibilities, ideally within a closely related industry
  • Strong formal and informal leadership skills to effectively define and implement a functional agenda
  • Previous experience in a comparable role with high level of visibility, complexity and accountability
  • Ability to deliver and thrive in an aggressive growth environment
  • Outstanding  conceptual,  analytical  and  strategic  skills,  coupled  with  a  high  energy  level - enjoys creative problem solving
  • Clear  view  of  where  the  business needs  to  go  in  the  next  years - capability to frame and discuss strategic options for the business
  • Demonstrated ability  to  achieve  results  in  a complex, multi-functional, multi-geographical environment and matrixed organization
  • Clear and concise written and oral communication with excellent interpersonal skills to rapidly establish credibility and trust among a broad range of individuals within and outside the company
  • Strong STEM (Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) educational background in preferred, MBA beneficial
