We are looking for a Head of Expression System Sciences to join us on a permanent basis, to be located at either our Slough or Cambridge offices. There will be an opportunity for hybrid working with a minimum of 2 days per week on site.

The Head of Expression System Sciences provides in-depth scientific and technical leadership for Lonza’s mammalian expression systems for the production of recombinant proteins, which are out-licensed to customers.  The role is essential in supporting existing GS (CHO) System licensees, the GS technical support team and Lonza internal customers. The role plays an important part in showcasing Lonza’s thought leadership and expertise to the external world, helping to cultivate a future pipeline of customers. The Head of Expression System Sciences supports Lonza’s innovation strategies, both through the internal Lonza Pharma and Biotech innovation projects and through in-licensing of differentiating technologies:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strong scientific / technical leadership to achieve the Licensing BU’s strategic business objectives
  • Provide scientific and technical leadership in the science and engineering disciplines needed for the development of mammalian cell culture processes for the manufacture of therapeutic proteins
  • Lead resolution of issues (technical, scientific, IP, regulatory, etc) that have affected, or have the potential to affect, GS licensees from developing mammalian cell culture processes for the manufacture of therapeutics proteins
    • Includes providing guidance and training to the GS technical support team for resolution of issues, ensuring a sustainable talent pipeline in this key area
  • Helps to build Lonza’s GS technical support into a best-in-class offering that strongly differentiates Lonza from the competition, by addressing key customer needs
  • Support Lonza Pharma and Biotech innovation strategy by working closely with R&D groups and Licensing on the assessment of new technologies
    • Provide strong scientific and technical guidance on projects in their SME area
  • Provide technical leadership for launch of new licensing offerings
    • Includes (i) designing and providing direction for any work required to demonstrate suitability of a technology for licensees; (ii) designing and providing direction for any work required to develop and / or make the technology suitable for licensees; and (iii) ensuring adequate guidelines are available for directing licensees in how to use the technology, e.g. in the GS Manual
  • Support discussions with external groups with respect to new differentiated technologies being considered for in-licensing
  • Provides scientific and technical support in the promotion of Lonza’s technologies to GS licensees and potential future customers
    • Participate in industry conferences and author articles
    • Provide scientific and technical support at activities and initiatives instigated by the licensing BU to promote Lonza technologies (e.g. GS tours)
    • Train and mentor the next generation of scientists to support the BU at conferences and activities / initiatives designed to promote Lonza technology
    • Ensure technical data in promotional materials, especially in Lonza’s digital presence, is maintained up to date
  • Working with IP, enhance, maintain, develop and ensure protection of Lonza’s IP portfolio in relevant areas
    • Includes raising awareness of the value of IP, and providing training in what information can be shared with GS licensees, to the GS technical support team and other relevant groups
  • Working with R&D, IP and Licensing, identify and assess new opportunities for Lonza to create or acquire intellectual property
  • Lead the assessment of the core GS technologies with alternative equipment and technologies
    • To provide GS licensees with multiple options for how to work with the GS system
  • Maintain strong grasp of regulatory, scientific and business trends emerging within and allied to industries which pose threats or opportunities for Lonza

Key Requirements:

  • Degree in a Biological Science / Biochemical Engineering discipline or related field
  • Experience in mammalian protein expression systems essential
  • Experience with microbial expression desirable, not essential
  • Preferably educated to PhD level
  • Typically at least 15 to 20 years highly relevant experience
    • Extensive experience with demonstrable track record in a biopharm/biotech company, or equivalent organisation.
    • Proven reputation in outside world (scientific, regulatory, IP/legal)
  • Experience in coaching and mentoring individuals who have been identified as having the desire and the ability to be the next generation of SMEs.
  • Able to communicate effectively at all levels (from junior scientist to global leaders)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Confidence, credibility, and vision to influence scientific / technical direction of the business
