Strategic Growth Project Lead

Today, Lonza is a global leader in life sciences operating across three continents. While we work in science, there’s no magic formula to how we do it. Our greatest scientific solution is talented people working together, devising ideas that help businesses to help people. In exchange, we let our people own their careers. Their ideas, big and small, genuinely improve the world. And that’s the kind of work we want to be part of.

The Strategic Growth Project Lead (PC) is responsible for achieving the business goals of the Growth Project. The PC acts as the “General Manager” of the Growth Project, provides strategic leadership and leads the governance across key functions, and ensures the project goals are aligned with market needs, Lonza/DPS strategy, and profitability targets. The Growth Project for this role is the buildup of an integrated commercial scale drug substance and drug product (DS and DP) manufacturing capacity in China.

Key responsibilities:

  • Champions the DS and DP expansion program in China and leads governance across key functions, Operations, Engineering, Finance, Commercial, Sales, HR, Supply Chain, Procurement.

  • Mandate to oversee and guide delivery of the outcome of the project on behalf of a Steering Committee.

  • Responsible for achieving the business goals of the growth project including long term revenue.

  • Ensures the conformity of the project to the major goals (market, strategy, profitability) and provides its justification from a market, strategy and economics point of view.

  • Establishes the project charter and works with Ops and Strategy to define the business requirements and validate business feasibility and technical approach together with the Project Director.

Context for and importance of the Project Champion Role:

  • A growth project is a critical enabler for our success. Growth investments must be independent and executed without impacting the base business, whilst recognizing interdependencies (e.g. delays to one project may require rescheduling into existing assets).

  • Division and Group Functions have a joint ownership and accountability throughout the project to make it successful. The Project Champion is responsible for achieving the business goals. The Project Director is responsible for delivering the project goals in terms of cost, time and scope.

  • Business requirements and scope must be jointly agreed between Division and Group Functions. A rigorous scope management approach is established to manage any changes and impacts in line with commercial commitments.

  • Key positions are allocated as full-time project assignments. The Functional Leads report into the Project and into their Function. All project team members assigned >50% will jointly share the project goals.

  • A robust Stage Gate Review will provide a clear picture on readiness to move into the next phase. The decision on readiness and related risks/ impacts is owned jointly by Division & Group Functions.

Key requirements:

  • Extensive years in Operations, Finance and Commercial background in the biotech or pharma sector and expert knowledge of biological manufacturing

  • 2+ years of CMO experience, in particular with drug product (DP)
