The Data Science (DS) Engineer’s primary responsibility is to build, validate and deploy real time process monitoring tools, analytics used for fault detection as well as providing predictive tools.  This individual will be required to drive the efficient exploration of complex datasets by constructing statistical models to summarize and explain process variability and equipment anomalies.  The DS Engineer will develop Multivariate Analysis (MVA) models for process monitoring and investigations. 

The DS Engineer will support the MSAT Team and Investigation teams thereby supporting the critical successive steps essential to Lonza’s local as well as global manufacturing operations.  The DS Engineer will work effectively with scientists, engineers and various stakeholders to understand ambiguous problems, assess data needs, develop/ maintain best-suited models and help strategize deployment.

Key responsibilities:

  • Set-up and validate data infrastructure to enable building of MVA models for online process monitoring
  • Data mining, data cleaning and preparation for analysis
  • Build, validate and deploy MVA models for online process monitoring and offline process investigations
  • Participate in and contribute to investigation of basic and complex process and equipment failure while gaining exposure to process while working with MSAT Scientist / SME
  • Develop and implement process monitoring tools, process advisory and predictive process control tools to solve complex bio-processing problems by using advanced statistical and data science techniques
  • Execute and lead complex scientific investigations for root cause analysis and to optimize process variables, providing knowledge and insight to Process Scientists and Engineers
  • Design, build and implement tools that provide analytical insights.  Develop comprehensive understanding of Lonza data structures and metrics to assess data needs, develop/ maintain best suited models, advocating and educating for improved utilization and understanding of how data science can benefit the site.

Key requirements:

  • Degree or Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering, Biochemical Engineering, Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Biology or related discipline
  • Competent in Multivariate Analysis and other statistical methods
  • Approaches high-level data challenges with a clear eye on what is important; employing the right approach/methods to make the maximum use of time and human resources
  • Excellent communication skills, outstanding action orientation and ability to work well in a cross-functional technical environment
  • Demonstrated track record in completing projects under tight timelines
  • Independent and a good team player
  • Excellent Organizational Skills
  • Customer focus
  • Meticulous and detail oriented
  • Understanding of cGMP regulations is preferable.
