Lonza Specialty Ingredients (LSI) is looking for a Research and Application Specialist to join our Morristown, NJ team. This person will conduct original and independent research that results in new formulations, new products, and new applications aligned with the marketing strategy and commercial targets for the Hygiene, Preservation and Personal Care business to ensure sustained growth of a critical business segment for Lonza MCS in North America. The role is responsible and accountable for the technical innovation activities, including IPM projects, and to maintain and grow Lonza’s best-in-class technical expertise within the Hygiene, Preservation and Personal Care Category.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Generate ideas, concepts, hypotheses, and areas of focus that lead to new formulations, products, processes or applications. Initiate and manage specific experimental programs to create new and/or improved products, formulations, processes, testing protocols, and participate in the development of technical literature.

  • Lead the IPM project portfolio for the technical aspects, working with Marketing, Regulatory, and Toxicology to monitor completion of critical activities on-time and in-full and manage projects through critical milestones in the stage gate process. Ensure projects have clearly defined objectives and timelines and report to Category management through monthly flash reports. Act as IPM project lead as needed. Critically evaluate current processes for efficiency and effectiveness and propose and implement improvements as appropriate.

  • Work with Marketing and R&D Management to generate a portfolio of R&D activities, including exploratory projects, IPM projects, and new launch technical support, that ensures a steady stream of product innovations and balances both long-term strategic and shorter term tactical needs. Work with R&D management to develop and implement new methods for Ideation for new products and applications.

  • Maintain a highly visible professional profile for Lonza through active participation in industry organizations, technical societies and customer interaction. Attend and participate at appropriate national/international meetings and trade shows. Participate in a product launches / promotions as appropriate.

  • Prepare detailed technical assessments and reports for documenting and communicating key technology developments, discoveries, and methods. Ensure invention records are prepared and filed in a timely manner.

  • Knowledge in Surfactant Chemistry; Formulation Development; Biocides and Preservatives; Disinfection and Sanitization; and Project Management

  • Competent and experienced in developing commercially viable products and concepts. 

  • Experienced in presenting technical papers to/for peer journals, industry associations, and professional societies, as required.

Key Requirements:

  • Masters in Chemistry required, Ph.D preferred in Chemistry or closely related science

  • MS with 8+ years or Ph.D. with 5+ years or equivalent experience in application development in a R&D lab

  • Experience in formulation development, surfactants, laundry product development, consumer care or healthcare products and project management
