Principal Scientist – Biopharmaceutical Purification Process Development and Characterisation

Today, Lonza is a global leader in life sciences operating across three continents. While we work in science, there’s no magic formula to how we do it. Our greatest scientific solution is talented people working together, devising ideas that help businesses to help people. In exchange, we let our people own their careers. Their ideas, big and small, genuinely improve the world. And that’s the kind of work we want to be part of.

We’re looking for a Principal Scientist who is a recognized downstream processing technical expert to join our team in Slough (UK) to provide technical leadership on highly complex customer and in-house projects in Process Development and across the wider Lonza network.   The successful candidate will work with Lonza scientists and customer experts to proactively identify and resolve complicated technical issues where there is a high level of uncertainty and ambiguity.  The Senior Principal Scientist will work on multi‑disciplinary strategic teams with colleagues across the Lonza network to ensure that Purification Development is an integral part of successfully delivering wider customer and corporate projects. They will actively mentor more junior technical colleagues and work with colleagues in the R&D team to identify the future technical requirements for the business and support their introduction in to commercial projects.  This will not be a hands on laboratory role but the Senior Principal Scientist will be expected to work at all times following Lonza safety and quality procedures. This position is based in Slough, UK  and reports to the Head of Purification Development.

Key responsibilities:

  • Acting as the senior technical leader for the Purification Development department
  • Leading technical problem solving on internal and customer projects using structured problem solving techniques to resolve issues in a scientifically robust and timely manner
  • Running lessons learnt sessions after completion of each project stage to identify improvements that should be used in future projects
  • Developing the technical knowledge of junior colleagues by coaching, providing formal training, arranging training by external groups and promoting a culture of high quality science in the department
  • Representing Purification Development on multi-disciplinary strategic teams to ensure success of new technologies and initiatives
  • Working with Manufacturing and MSAT colleagues to review how purification processes run in a GMP environment and identify improvements that should be introduced at the development stage

Key requirements:

  • BSc/BEng, MSc/MEng or PhD/EngD in Biological Sciences, Biotechnology or Biochemical Engineering
  • Extensive experience of developing and trouble-shooting purification methods and technologies used for the downstream processing of biopharmaceuticals
  • Expert understanding of downstream process development, scale up, GMP manufacturing, process characterisation and validation.
  • Significant experience of working in the biopharmaceutical industry, including working for a biopharmaceutical development company and/or a contract development and manufacturing organisation (CDMO) and/or a process technology company.
  • Experience of working in a customer facing role discussing complex technical issues in a constructive and diplomatic way.
  • Experience of coaching more junior scientific colleagues to develop their technical awareness and understanding
  • Excellent spoken and written English communication skills

Every day, Lonza’s products and services have a positive impact on millions of people. For us, this is not only a great privilege, but also a great responsibility. How we achieve our business results is just as important as the achievements themselves. At Lonza, we respect and protect our people and our environment. Any success we achieve is no success at all if not achieved ethically.

People come to Lonza for the challenge and creativity of solving complex problems and developing new ideas in life sciences. In return, we offer the satisfaction that comes with improving lives all around the world. The satisfaction that comes with making a meaningful difference
