We are looking for a Lead Scientist to join our Process Development function based at our site in Cambridge, UK.

The successful candidate will support Process Development by performing, establishing and troubleshooting a range of analytical tests such as HPLC, ELISA, IC-IEF and gel based assays. This position is lab based and also is a Customer facing role. This position requires a degree in relevant scientific / technical discipline and in depth knowledge of biochemical methods as applied to protein analysis and process derived constituents or appropriate laboratory experience.

Key responsibilities:

  • Design and execute experimental plans to develop HPLC, IC-IEF and CE-SDS based analytical methods for use with recombinant biopharmaceutical products
  • Verify method performance meets the requirements defined in the analytical target profile
  • Transferring analytical methods to other internal laboratories and sites
  • Method troubleshooting and optimisation where required
  • Preparation and approval of test methods, study protocols and study reports
  • Maintaining a high level of scientific expertise and keeping up to date with current technical and regulatory expectations
  • Training, coaching and supporting junior scientists
  • Write stage proposal including technical and cost content
  • Application of regulatory guidelines to experimental design
  • Study Director for assay validation studies
  • Lead implementation of new assay platforms
  • Deliver technical stage according to a timeline                 
  • Escalate risks and issues in a timely fashion (technical, resource, Customer, cost)
  • Lead problem solving / trouble shooting / lessons learned activities
  • Proactive approach to own continuous professional development
  • System maintenance / System owner
  • Review and write reports to an agreed standard suitable for final review by Head of Department

Key requirements:

  • PhD or BSc in relevant scientific / technical discipline (Biochemistry, Biological science , Biomedical science) and appropriate experience
  • Previous laboratory and technical experience gained during degree and previous work experience
  • Working knowledge of protein structure, post translational modifications, degradation pathways and critical quality attributes relevant to biopharmaceutical products
  • Hands-on experience in developing methods for use on novel biopharmaceutical products
  • Experience in solving technical problems observed during method development and routine method operation
  • Ability to lead development of methods including writing experimental plan, interpret data and familiar with optimisation techniques
  • Experience in the use of statistical tools such as DoE to support method optimisation
  • Planning: Proven ability to create and resource a plan and deliver it using Gantt and Action log. Reviews plans of others. Run effective project meetings.
  • Prioritize and manage own time effectively
  • Mentoring and Coaching: Able to teach others laboratory skills. Able to impart developing SME knowledge to others
  • Hands-on experience in the routine use and operation of equipment
  • Ability to set clear direction and goals
