We are currently looking for an experienced Purification Development Group Leader to join our team based at our manufacturing site in Slough, UK. The role holder will lead a team of scientists and technologists who are developing and characterising downstream processes for new protein-based biopharmaceuticals. Proactive line management to help team members to solve technical issues,  prioritise activities and develop their technical and transferable skills is a key part of the role. The Group Leader will be accountable for the team’s delivery of customer project and internal innovation work packages on time, on budget and to the required quality. 

Key responsibilities:

  • Day-to-day management of a team of scientists and technologists including regular 1:1s, objective setting and personal development discussions
  • Oversight of customer project stages to ensure that work is delivered on time and to budget
  • Working in partnership with customers by attending regular customer calls and face-to-face meetings
  • Providing process characterisation and process development projects with technical guidance to resolve issues in a technically robust and timely manner
  • Ensuring that all work is completed to an appropriate standard for a cGMP environment
  • Running daily Hoshin meetings to resolve any issues team members are facing that are producing barriers and reporting in to higher level Hoshin meetings as required
  • Maintenance of resource schedule for direct reports to ensure that an appropriate workload is achieved
  • Performance management for direct reports
  • Ensuring that direct reports are appropriately trained for their role and personal development objectives
  • Contributing to the day to day running of the department by performing assigned tasks
  • Working collaboratively with other departments and Lonza sites to resolve issues
  • Delivering elements of departmental strategy as agreed with the Head of Purification Development
  • Leading problem solving / lessons learned activities to identify improvements to systems and processes
  • Representing Lonza for new Customer sales support and written proposals including technical content and  cost calculations

Key requirements:

  • B.Sc. in a relevant discipline, such as biochemistry, biochemical engineering, biology.
  • Expertise in downstream processing, including experience in one or more of: process development for monoclonal antibodies and more diverse biopharmaceuticals,  process characterisation,  high throughput screening (HTS), ultrafiltration/diafiltration, multi-factorial experimental designs, process scale up and transfer
  • Experience of line management of up to 10 people.
  • Experience of working in a cGMP biopharmaceutical manufacturing organisation
  • Experience of working in a contract development/manufacturing organization in a customer facing role
