Immune Defense: Protect Yourself to Maintain Optimal Health

As the immune health category continues its forward momentum, we see increases in the amount of products touting healthy benefits and additional applications for them to be utilized. As expected, consumer knowledge has followed suit. Savvy consumers are learning more about the immune ingredients they purchase, how they work and why. Therefore, as consumers become better versed in the immune category, the practice of conducting and publishing credible supportive science has proven once again to be a differentiating factor.

Following this model, Lonza recently completed and presented research supporting its premium immune ingredient, ResistAid™. While the technical properties of ResistAid™ should not be overlooked, it is the end benefit to the user that is important to focus on, as the study supports.

Presented at the 50th annual meeting of the American College of Nutrition, the study showed that ResistAid™ provides benefits on the adaptive immune response, which responds to specific antigens. The study results also indicate that ResistAid™ appropriately manages the immune response. The randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial was designed to test the hypothesis that ingestion of ResistAid™ would selectively enhance the antibody response to a vaccine in healthy adults. The study showed that the ResistAid™ group demonstrated a higher antibody (Ab) response to the vaccine than the placebo group during the 10 weeks following vaccination. It is the first data showing evidence that ResistAid™ can enhance the humoral (specific) immune response.

The study broadens the understanding of the beneficial impact of ResistAid™ on the immune system. Prior research had shown a non-specific, cellular response in healthy populations. However, the new evidence shows the immune benefits are broadened to include the adaptive immune response, which is a response to specific antigens.
The study further showed that ResistAid™ had an immunomodulatory effect, meaning that ResistAid™ enhanced the appropriate response to the antigen without indiscriminately enhancing other arms of the immune system that would not be expected to respond. Combined with its ability to increase beneficial immune cell populations while supporting natural killer cells, cytokines, macrophages and white blood cells, ResistAid™ supplies companies with an ingredient that can be incorporated into a variety of delivery forms for end-use products.

Responses to vaccination are widely used indicators of immune function and provide high-quality information on the effect of nutrients on protective in vivo immune responsiveness. The use of this research model is not intended to suggest the use of ResistAid™ in conjunction with any vaccine, or that the product helps prevent, cure or treat any disease. Rather, it provides additions to the body of research that suggests dietary intake of ResistAid™ may help support healthy immune function.
