    L-carnitine is essential for transporting long-chain fatty acids across the mitochondrial membrane, for subsequent fat breakdown and energy generation.

    Small amounts of L-carnitine are synthesized in the body every day.  L-carnitine is naturally present in the human diet in a variety of food sources, particularly in red meat.  A well-balanced, non-vegetarian Western diet is estimated to provide 100–300 mg of L-carnitine per day.

    Weight Management
    Carnipure™ supplementation was found to increase the oxidation of fatty acids in healthy human subjects. In two different studies, the subjects received labeled fatty acids with a meal, prior to and after ten days of supplementation with Carnipure™. As a breakdown product of labeled fatty acids, labeled CO2 was then measured in the exhaled air.  In the group that received Carnipure™ tartrate, a significant increase in exhalation of labeled CO2 was observed, indicating a significant increase in fatty acid oxidation.  This leads to the conclusion that this nutrient can be beneficial to people who care about their weight or participate in any weight management programs.

    When used in conjunction with a reduced calorie diet and moderate exercise, L-carnitine  supplementation resulted in a significantly greater loss of body weight in obese people and a decrease in low density lipoprotein (LDL), blood sugar levels and blood pressure.

    It is important to remember that the dietary supplement Carnipure™ is not recommended as a treatment for obesity. This is a disease that requires intervention by a health professional. However, on the basis of the above studies, it can be concluded that supplementary Carnipure™ can contribute to optimal fat oxidation and, along with dietary changes and exercise, Carnipure™ supplementation may promote a healthier body weight. It can therefore be an important part of a healthy weight management program for individuals concerned about their weight.

    Exercise and Recovery
    Studies show that Carnipure™ tartrate supplementation can support recovery after exercise. Researchers observed a decrease in the production of free radicals, less tissue damage and reduced muscle soreness after exercise in recreationally trained athletes following 3 weeks of Carnipure™ tartrate supplementation. These effects were found to be dose-dependent, present both in young and old, male and female subjects. Supplementation with Carnipure™ tartrate was found to induce an increase in muscle oxygen consumption, providing a potential mechanism for reduced hypoxic stress following resistance exercise.

    Cardiovascular Health
    The heart obtains 70% of its energy from fat breakdown. The fundamental role that L-carnitine plays in energy metabolism together with the dependence of the heart on fatty acid breakdown for energy production, make L-carnitine an important energy provider for the heart.

    Male Fertility
    Defined as the inability of a couple to achieve pregnancy after one year of unprotected intercourse, infertility affects about 15% of couples who are attempting their first pregnancy.

    Men frequently have a problem with the number, motility or shape of their sperm and it is estimated that 40% of human infertility is entirely or partly related to deficiencies in sperm quality. L-carnitine provides valuable support for the male reproductive system. In sperm, the high concentration of L-carnitine plays a role in energy metabolism and most importantly, may support sperm quality. A number of clinical studies have reported the benefits of oral L-carnitine supplementation in terms of its effects on sperm. L-carnitine supplementation to infertile men was found to increase sperm concentration, sperm count, sperm motility and sperm with rapid progression.

    Healthy Aging
    Elderly people have a lower energy demand and eating habits change with age. For example, they usually consume less meat. At the same time, the dietary intake of both L-carnitine and the nutrients required to make L-carnitine is reduced. A decreased endogenous synthesis could also be shown by researchers. A decrease of L-carnitine in various body compartments with age has often been described in literature. The resulting reduction in energy metabolism due to lower L-carnitine levels can be restored by L-carnitine supplementation. Two months of Carnipure™ tartrate administration (2g/d) was shown to partly reverse  age-related changes of oxidative metabolism in elderly females.

    Infants
    Major metabolic changes occur in the human neonate during the transition from fetal life where glucose is the major energy fuel to extrauterine life with fatty acids and ketone bodies serving as a fuel alternative to glucose.

    For babies, L-carnitine can be considered an essential nutrient since L-carnitine biosynthesis is not yet fully developed. Therefore, babies are highly dependent on exogenous sources to build up L-carnitine levels in blood and tissue. Fortunately, breast milk contains natural L-carnitine. However, soy protein contain no detectable levels of this nutrient and cow's milk formulas lose some L-carnitine during processing. In light of these findings, it is not surprising that lower serum L-carnitine levels and higher serum free fatty acids were reported in full term neonates fed L-carnitine-free soy formula.

    It is a positive development that both soy-based and cow's milk-based infant formulas are now routinely fortified with L-carnitine.

    The proprietary and fully backward integrated Carnipure™ production process was invented by Lonza scientists in Switzerland. It directly produces the L-isomer of carnitine, the form found in nature.
