12 Months of Snail and Slug Free Gardens

Winter
Check houseplants for insect infestation and bait your garden during sparse warm days. As winter ends, the sporadic warm days that take place prior to spring can lead to the first slug and snail damage of the year. During these warm days, slugs and snails emerge from their hibernation and can immediately take a bite out of your garden’s growth. Because of this, it is important to apply Meta® baits during these false spring days. This ensures that your plants are protected from slugs and snails from the beginning of their initial emergence.

Spring
Applying Meta® slug and snail bait in areas prone to slug and snail invasion during spring is imperative to the health of your garden. It is important to bait for slugs and snails, especially before and after rains. Gardeners who plant hostas must pay special attention to slug populations in these sections of their yard. As spring rains continue to provide water that fruits, vegetables and flowers need to grow to their potential, it also provides slugs with the damp soil they prefer. Border treatments with Meta® products can prevent slugs from reaching your garden, as well as around mulch piles, will provide an effective barrier between the garden you work so hard on, and the slugs and snails that will destroy it.

Summer
Gardeners who water their plants often must be prepared to battle a slug and snail population throughout the summer, and should use bait formulated with Meta® active ingredient, while employing proper baiting methods.

Fall
Fall is as important as any other season to bait yards for slugs and snails so as to control the slimy pests before they can lay eggs that will hatch during the early spring. Slugs and snails are hermaphrodites, so each one can launch a full attack on the fruits – and leaves – of your labor. Baiting in the fall can greatly help to prevent slugs and snails from laying eggs. Combining this tactic with late winter and early spring applications of Meta® baits gives a garden the best chance of growing throughout the spring and summer without slugs and snails.
