LBS has 4 businesses groups: Rapid Testing Service, Media , Cell Therapy& Molecular Biology and Cell Discovery. The LBS headquarters and largest manufacturing site is located in Walkersville MD.
Rapid Testing Service
The largest part of Rapid Testing business is Endotoxin Detection which are kits in varying formats utilizing lysate derived from the blood of a horseshoe crabs. The crab blood is processed by the Salisbury Maryland site. This test is required for testing of human and veterinary drugs, biologics, water for injection systems, and medical devices.
Media
The media department manufactures cell culture media and sera used in research, pharmaceutical and cell therapy manufacturing processes. Over 1.6 million liters of liquid media were produced at the Walkersville site in 2006. The newly completed powdered media facility blends and mills the raw chemicals used to formulate media and has capacity up to 9,000L. Verviers Belgium, the sister site to Walkersville, also produces both liquid and powdered media products.
Cell Discovery and Molecular Biology
Tissues are acquired and primary cells are manufactured in both the Walkersville and Gaithersburg Maryland sites to support the cell discovery business.Over 1,400 human and animal tissues are processed annually between the 2 sites. The Molecular Biology products are manufactured by the Rockland Maine site.
Cell Therapy
Cell Therapy is a contract manufacturing business and the industry leader in the production of cells for human therapeutic and clinical use
The group manufactures both autologous and allogenic cells, manufactures cell banks and aseptically manufactures primary and stem cells in production quantities for their customers.
The Walkersville site is ISO 9001 certified since 1984, has had successful FDA inspections, over 70 successful customer audits since 2004. Additionally the site is USDA inspected, AALAC accredited and approved by the FDA , NY and MD as a licensed Tissue Bank.
