Allendale, NJ, 16 July 2014 – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported recently what Lonza and its customers have long known — that despite its nickname as “the cruise ship virus,” the Norovirus is principally transmitted in restaurants, cafeterias and other food preparation and delivery facilities. The CDC estimates that about one in every 15 Americans, or 20 million people, get sick each year with this virus1 .
Norovirus often makes headlines when it spreads rapidly among passengers and crews on cruise ships and causes severe gastrointestinal illness; but its dangers are widespread. The CDC notes that Norovirus is the leading cause of food-borne illnesses. The agency states the best way to reduce the number of infections is to improve disinfection practices in restaurant kitchens, where sick workers can transmit the virus to hard surfaces.
